Quya Raymi

Quya Raymi is one of the four most important festivals of the Andean and Inca calendar. It is celebrated every 21 September with the equinox, marking the start of the sowing season and honouring femininity, fertility, the Moon (Mama Killa) and the Pachamama.

  • Meaning of the name: From the Quechua Quya (queen, princess or wife of the Inca) and Raymi (festival or celebration). In some regional variants it is also called Killa Raymi (Festival of the Moon).
  • Honouring fertility and women: In pre-Hispanic times the month of September (Coya Raymi Killa) was led spiritually by women. Rites were held in honour of the Coya (the female ruler of the empire) and of the Moon, the deity who governs harvests, marriages and reproductive cycles.

The ceremony

The offering

The offering to the Thunupa volcano is a sacred ritual of reciprocity and gratitude known as a despacho or pago.

The Quya Raymi ceremony is held with the equinox and the end of the earth’s rest, marking the start of the sowing season and the final preparation of the soil to receive the first seeds. The despacho, or pago to the Pachamama (an Andean ritual of reciprocity), means building an offering, a structured “mesa” of sacred elements, to give thanks and to ask for a prosperous harvest.

Apu Thunupa

The Thunupa volcano is one of the most revered deities of the Bolivian altiplano, traditionally held to be an Apu, one of the protective spirits who dwell in the mountains.

The ceremony Tata Estevan offers to Apu Thunupa is a personal expression of a relationship built over the years as protector and guardian of this sacred place, a source of powerful energy.

Thunupa is a shared effort. Each of us brings a different part, and we hold the retreat together.

Kevin Garnica (Rio)

Creator of experiences, building bridges between ancestral knowledge and a contemporary way of living well. A nomad who connects with ancestral cultures to remember and recover their knowledge, and to pass it on from a contemporary point of view. His path has led him to train in meditation, yoga, tantra, breathwork, conscious touch, coaching and neuro-linguistic programming, among other practices. The retreat began as his vision: he organises the logistics and, together with his team, guides the meditations.

Tata Estevan

Tata Estevan, originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico, has lived in Bolivia for the last 36 years and has worked on several cultural and environmental programmes. Today Tata Estevan is the host of Casa Pueblo, a centre in Sucre, Bolivia, dedicated to spiritual growth. Tata Estevan has received two karpay initiations from Q’ero priests in Peru and is a member of the Consejo Amawtico of Tawantinsuyu, which preserves and passes on ancestral Andean knowledge.

Susana Barrero

Susana Barrero has a personal connection with Andean traditions. She trained and worked in Amsterdam as a guide for deep inner journeys, and spent ten years in conscious wellness, from organising conscious events to running a superfood shop. At Thunupa she supports the group as part of the team that guides the spiritual experience, and through Spectralmoon Studio she takes care of the digital side: this website and the digital materials.
